2peter 3:17-18

Text: 2 Peter 3:17-18 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 

Beloved are those loved by God
Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
 
He chose them
 Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him [Christ] before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  
 
A covenant love
Deuteronomy 7:6-7 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. 7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
 
My beloved son
2 Peter 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 
 
Peter readers were “in Christ”

Act on what you know

These things

We made known to you the kingdom truths
2 Peter 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
 
Peter’s emphesis
2 Peter 1:12 “... I [Peter] will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
 
To make our calling and election sure into the kingdom
2 Peter 1:10-11 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly intothe everlastingthe age-lasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
 
Brethren, are not in darkness
1 Thessalonians 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
 
Knowledge delivers the just
Proverbs 11:9 “.. through knowledge shall the just be delivered.”
 
Beware!!!

You can be led or carried away

Jesus – TAKE HEED!

John – LOOK TO YOURSELVES!
2 John 7-8 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus [as the] Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 
 
Jude – UNGODLY MEN CREPT IN UNAWARES
Jude 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 
 
False teachers carried Barnabas away
Galatians 2:13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
 
With the error
2 Peter 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
 
Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
 
2 Thessalonians 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

Our exhortation is not of error
1 Thessalonians 2:3-4 For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we declare it, not to please people but God, who examines our hearts.
 
The error of the wicked

A ship that runs aground

Fall into condemnation of the devil

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 
 
unbelief
Hebrews 3:12 See, brethren, lest there shall be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in the falling away from the living God, (YLT)
 
Hebrews 4:11 Let us labour [give diligence] therefore to enter into that rest [the sabbath rest – the kingdom of God], lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
 
Fall away from entering into the kingdom
2 Peter 1:10-11 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
 
Kept from falling
Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
 
Don’t think you cannot fall…TAKE HEED!
1 Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
 
From your own stedfastness
2 Peter 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
 
Stedfastness is unwavering commitment
1 Chronicles 28:7 'Moreover I will establish his kingdom forever, if he is steadfast to observe My commandments and My judgments, as it is this day.' (NKJ)
 
Psalm 78:37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
 
Psalm 112:7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
 
Proverbs 11:19 He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death.
 
Luke 8:15 But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing the word, cling to it with an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance. (NET)
 
1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
 
Colossians 1:23 “if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel…”
 
Colossians 2:5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.

Grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
 
Grow in respect to salvation
1 Peter 2:2 like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
 
Grace is increased through the knowledge of Jesus Christ
2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
 
Grace is the power of Christ
2 Corinthians 12:9 And he [Jesus] said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
 
Divine enablement
1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
 
Knowledge of the kingdom of God
Acts 20:24,25,32 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. 32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
 
 
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

To him is the glory both now, and to the day of the age! Amen. YLT
