A Father’s Responsibility Toward His Family
December 07, 2008
The beginning of a Christian home
Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Mark 10:6-8 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they two shall be one flesh: so then they are no more two, but one flesh.
The normal result of marriage is children – a family
Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them [Adam and Eve], and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply…
Children are of the Lord
Psalm 127:3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD [“a gift of the LORD,” NAS]: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
Young women are encouraged to marry and bear children
1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
The Christian home
1 Timothy 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
The home has organization just as the church
1 Corinthians 14:33,40 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
The church reflects the home
1 Timothy 3:5 For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?
The father is the leader of his family
Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
He must rule his own house well
1 Timothy 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Love you wives first over all
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Wives submit to their own husbands
Ephesians 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
His helper and companion
Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
The children obey their parents
Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
The father must be the breadwinner
Genesis 3:17-19 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
He must be the provider of his family
1 Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel [“an unbeliever” NKJ].
He must work to provide for his own
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
The father must be the spiritual provider of the home
Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
The Fathers obedience makes the home a refuge
Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
Spiritual education must start in the home with the fathers
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
He is the pastor of his home
Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord
Fathers encourage their children
Colossians 3:21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
Training them
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
The father must not spare his rod
Proverbs 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
Even when they cry
Proverbs 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
Eli did not restrain his sons and his house was judged for it
1 Samuel 3:13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
