No man can tame the tongue
James 3:8-9
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.      9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude [or likeness] of God.
 
Brethren should speak different
James 3:10
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren [those that are seeking to enter the kingdom, Mt.7:21;12:50], these things ought not so to be.
 
THERE IS POWER IN THE TONGUE
Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
 
Don’t underestimate its power
James 3:5
So also, the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. (NLT)
 
The tongue can be a weapon
Jeremiah 18:18
18 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. 
 
Watch your mouth
Psalm 141:3
Set a watch [or guard, NKJ], O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
 
A bridled tongue
Psalm 39:1
I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.  
 
Maturity manifested
James 3:2
For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word [or in what he speaks], he isa perfect man [“that man has reached maturity of character,” Weymouth Translation], able also to bridle the whole body.
 
unbridled tongue
James 1:26
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. 28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

Speak to build up others
Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
 
THE LORD HATES SOWING DISCORD

16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
 
A TALEBEARER
Proverbs 11:13
A talebearer [one who goes about slandering others, NET], revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people… I am the LORD.
 
The effects of a TALEBEARER
Proverbs 18:8
The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.   
 
Put them out of the church

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer [a slanderer, NIV], or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
13 Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
 
Strife shall cease
Proverbs 26:20
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.   
 
Keep your soul from troubles

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles
 
Put off filthy communication
Colossians 3:8
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
