Baptized Into Christ To Reign With Him
September 18, 2005
Only One Baptism
Ephesians 4:4-5 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Water Baptism
Matthew 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them (into water) in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Disciples are made to enter into the kingdom of God
Acts 14:22 Confirming [or making strong] the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith (“things hoped for…things not seen,” Heb.11:1), and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom [basileia] of God.
The kingdom of God is the thousand years
Revelation 20:4”…they did live and reign [basileuo - to rule in a kingdom as a king] with Christ [the Messiah King] the thousand years”
Counted worthy of it
2 Thessalonians 1:5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
Baptism identifies us with the things concerning
the kingdom of God
Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Baptized in view to reign with Christ
Romans 6:3-4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ [aorist, passive, indicative] were baptized into His “death” [aorist, passive, indicative]? 4 Therefore we were “buried” with him [aorist, passive, indicative] by baptism into death: that like as (in resemblance) Christ was “raised up from the dead” by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection. 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him (through baptism), that the body of sin might be destroyed [or may be made inoperative], that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For He that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ (through baptism), we believe [present, active, indicative - faith] that we shall also live with him.
To “live with Him” is to “reign with Him”
2 Timothy 2:11-12 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him (through baptism), we shall also live with him: 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
Re-baptism is Scriptural
Acts 19:1-5 “…Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Spirit since (or when) ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Spirit. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Are you called to His kingdom and glory?
1 Thessalonians 2:12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.
Christ brings His glory at His return
Matthew 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Are your eyes looking for the blessed hope?
Titus 2:13 Looking for the blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Have your eyes been enlightened?
Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding [or mind] being having been enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.
Don’t make excuses!
Luke 14:15-20,24 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. 16 Then said he (Jesus) unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade [or CALLED] many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden [or CALLED], Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. 24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden [or CALLED] shall taste of my supper.
Take action now to make your calling sure!
2 Peter 1:10-11 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence [quick to apply and give action] to make your calling and election sure [safe from danger; without any doubt]: for if ye do these things [add works to faith, v.5-7], ye shall never fall [to fail of participating in, miss a share in]: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered [provided or supplied] unto you abundantly [or richly] into the everlasting age-lasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
The called were water baptized
Acts 2:39,41,47 For the promise (to be “heirs of the kingdom,” Jam.2:5) is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many (of the saved) as the Lord our God shall call. 41 Then they (the many called) that gladly received his word (the promise in v.39) were baptized (in water): and the same day there were added unto them (the local church in Jerusalem) about three thousand souls.
Baptism added “the called” to the Lord’s church
Acts 2:47…the Lord added(through baptism in v.41) to the church (the local body in Jerusalem) daily such as should be saved (saved from that disobedient generation in verse 40).
Baptized into Jesus Christ
Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us [the called, 1:6] as were baptized into Jesus Christ (the church, His body) were baptized into his death?
The local church is Christ’s body
Colossians 1:18 “… He (Jesus Christ) is the head of the body, the church…”
Galatians 1:13 “… beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it”
Acts 9:4-5 “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 …I am Jesus whom thou persecutest”
Entrance into one body is through water baptism
1 Corinthians 12:12-13 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ (the local church body) 13 For in one Spirit we (the called at Corinth, 1:2) were all (the many members) baptized (through water) into one body (or Christ, v.12, the local church at Corinth) whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free -- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit (no contention or division but oneness).
Jesus started His church by baptizing disciples
John 4:1-2 “…Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples.
The church is were we practice the Lord’s supper
Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
The Lord’s supper is a command!
1 Corinthians 11:23-25 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do [present, active, imperative] in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye [present, active, imperative], as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
The Lord’s supper typifies the banquet in kingdom of God
Mark 14:25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
