Text: 2 Peter 2:14-15a “Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: 15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray…”
eyes full of adultery (unfaithfulness)
2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
our eyes are important
Matthew 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
God was Israel’s husband by covenant
Isaiah 54:5 For your Maker is your husband, The LORD of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.
Jeremiah 31:32 “…my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Israel, the wife of the Lord, committed adultery
Jeremiah 3:20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
They looked to other gods
Hosea 3:1 Then the LORD said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just like the love of the LORD for the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love the raisin cakes of the pagans."
An adulterous wife
Ezekiel 16:31-32 " You erected your shrine [for idols] at the head of every road, and built your high place in every street. Yet you were not like a harlot, because you scorned payment. 32 "You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband.
Ezekiel 23:37 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.
Jesus came to an adulterous generation
Matthew 12:39 But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
The false teachers were married to the Lord
2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you [church members], who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
Married in baptism
Romans 7:4 Therefore, my brethren [“you…were baptized into Christ 6:3], you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another -- to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
One husband - Christ
2 Corinthians 11:2-3 For I am jealous over you [“the church of God which is at Corinth,” 1:1] with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband [“I gave you all in marriage to a single husband,” NJB], that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
they become Servants of Satan
2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
they are adulterers
James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Come out from the whore!
Revelation 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
1 Corinthians 6:15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
Unrestrained from sin
2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin [“unrestrained from sin,” Diaglott]; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
Beguiling unstable souls
2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
by good words and flattering speeches
Romans 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches [“flattering speeches,” NKJ] deceive the hearts of the simple.
Experts at getting what they want
2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
children of a curse
2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
The cursed children are temporarily punished
Hebrews 6:8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting [age-lasting = 1,000 years] fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Forsaken the right way and are gone astray
2 Peter 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
True Christianity was called “THE WAY”
Acts 9:2 and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
Acts 19:9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
Acts 19:23 And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.
Acts 24:14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the Way which they call a sect, so serve I the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets;
Acts 24:22 But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will determine your matter.
The right way
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
The way of truth
2 Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
The way of righteousness
2 Peter 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
The way of righteousness is the fear of the Lord!
Acts 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
the Fear of His warnings
Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
