Imputed Righteousness (Part 1)

October 23, 2005

Fellowship is in righteousness
2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

The Lord loves righteousness
Psalm 11:7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

God takes no pleasure in wickedness
Psalm 5:4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.

Righteousness is a character issue
Psalm 1:6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 37:16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

Proverbs 10:2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

Matthew 1:19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her, desired to put her away secretly.

Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Righteousness is discovered in God’s commandments
Psalm 119:172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.
2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

The righteousness of the saints is relative
Ephesians 5:9 For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.

Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Righteousness is not a position or a thing that is transferred
1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

The righteous live by faith
Habakkuk 2:4 “…the righteous shall live by his faith.

Hebrews 10:38 Now the just [or righteous] shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Hebrews 11:4By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous…”

Confessing our sins makes us righteous again
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Proverbs 24:16 For a just or righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Righteousness is through faith
Hebrews 11:33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.

God can never justify those that live in wickedness
Proverbs 17:15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 24:24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:

God imputes righteousness to them that are righteous
Numbers 25:3, 7-8 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
Psalm 106:30-31 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed. 31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

God imputed righteousness to Abraham
Genesis 15:6 And he [Abraham] believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for Righteousness.

Abraham believed God concerning a great reward
Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.” (Nasb)

Abraham lived in view of the promised reward
Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after (in the future) receive for an inheritance, obeyed (he was righteous); and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Abraham was once again imputed righteousness
Genesis 22:9-10 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

James 2:21-23 Was not Abraham our father justified by works (of faith), when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with [or worked together with] his works, and by works was faith made perfect (or approved for reward)?  23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,  Abraham believed God (this was his overall lifestyle), and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
