Gaining The Victory Over The Vanity Of Materialism

April 23, 2006

GAIN IS NOT GODLINESS
1 Timothy 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

The ungodly gain in this world
Psalm 73:12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches

Use the world but do not abuse it
1 Corinthians 7:31 And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.

Devil worship
Luke 4:5-7 And the devil, taking him [Jesus] up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine

Treasures upon earth
Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

My kingdom is not of this world
John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

A man’s life is more than things
Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth

Great gain is godliness with contentment
1 Timothy 6:6-8 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

Pursue spiritual riches
Psalm 119:72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver

Psalm 119:127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

Proverbs 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Proverbs 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

Labour not to be rich
Proverbs 23:4-5 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. 5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

Labour for your own bread
2 Thessalonians 3:8 Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought [without paying for it or free of charge]; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

Labour to give to others in need
Ephesians 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth

the prayer of Godly man
Proverbs 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

the outcome of greed
1 Timothy 6:9 But [in contrast to being content with food and covering v.8] they that will [or desire to] be rich fall into temptation and a snare [or a trap], and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Achan was drown in destruction
Joshua 7:21,24-25 When I (Achan) saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.  24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

A destruction and perdition in the next age
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “…when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting age-lasting (“a thousand years,” Rev.20:6) destruction [“and exclusion” RVS] from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.

The love of money can turn us from the faith
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from [led astray, turned from] the faith (a life style in view of things hoped for, things not seen Heb.11:1), and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

It chokes the word of the kingdom
Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful (no effect)

Flee, follow, and fight
1 Timothy 6:11-12, 14 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal aionios life or age-lasting life, whereunto thou art also called…” 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

A CHARGE for the rich in this world
1 Timothy 6:17-19 Charge them (Christian’s) that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate [“ready to give, willing to share,” NKJ];  19 Laying up in store [“a treasure,” Net] for themselves a good foundation against the time to come [“for the coming age,” NIV], that they may lay hold on eternal aionios life or age-lasting life.

conquer materialism through future prophesy
2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come (the second coming Zech.14:1-9) as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things [this materialistic world] shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?      13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, (in the age to come) wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
