1Peter 3:8-9
1Peter 3:8-9 Finally [telos], be ye ALL [pas] of one mind [homophron], having compassion one of another [sumpathes], love as brethren [philadelphos], be pitiful [eusplagchnos], be courteous [philophron]: 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
Greek Text : Tο δε τελος παντες ομοφρονες συμπαθεις φιλαδελφοι ευσπλαγχνοι φιλοφρονες.
- (NASB) - "To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit."
- (NIV) - "Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble."
- (NLT) - "Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters (show brotherly love). Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude."
- (BBE) - Last of all, see that you are all in agreement; feeling for one another, loving one another like brothers, full of pity, without pride
ONE MIND
Philippians 2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded [Pres,Act, Subj], having [Pres,act] the same love [no favoritism], being of one accord [unity of purpose and goal], of one mind [minding the one thing] [Pres,act].
LIVE IN HARMONY WITH ONE ANOTHER
2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind [Pres,Act,Imp] , live in peace [Pres,Act,Imp]; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
HAVE A HARMONIOUS DISPOSITION
Proverbs 25:8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
1 Corinthians 12:26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. (NKJV)
Roman 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
OUR HIGH PRIEST SYMPATHIZES
Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 13:3 Remember the prisoners asif chained with them; those who are mistreated; since you yourselves are in the body also. (NKJV)
LOVE AS BRETHREN
Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned [philostorgoi] one to another with brotherly love [philadelphia]; in honour preferring one another:;
GENUINE AND FERVENT
1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
Hebrews 13:1 "Let brotherly love continue [present active imperative]."
CONTINUE LOVING IN TIMES OF SUFFERING
2 Timothy 1:15-18 "This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: 17. But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.18. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he MINISTERED unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well."
Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted [eusplagchnos], forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
HAVING INWARD AFFECTION
2 Corinthians 7:15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.
1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
HUMBLE MINDED
Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
DON'T RETALIATE - BLESS INSTEAD
1Peter 3:9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing [saying unkind things; insult, railing]: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should [subjunctive mood] inherit a blessing.
NOT GIVING TIT FOR TAT
1 Thessalonian 5:15 See that none render [to pay or give back] evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
NOT REVILE IN RETURN
1 Peter 2:23 “Who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously”.
GOD RESERVES THE RIGHT OF VENGEANCE
Romans 12:17-19 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved [Romans 1:7], avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD
Romans 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:14 Bless them (command to continually speak well of) which persecute you: bless (present imperative), and curse not.
WE ARE CALLED TO BLESS

CALLED TO DO WELL AND SUFFER TAKING PATIENTLY
1Peter 2:20-21 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
INHERIT A BLESSING
Hebrews 12:17 For you know that afterward, when he [Esau] wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM
Genesis 28:1,3-4 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, .. 3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; 4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
THE BLESSED SHALL INHERIT THE KINGDOM
Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
