1Peter 3:12-15

December 20, 2007

The Text: 1 Peter 3:12-15 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.  13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

They will also persecute you

John 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

The lord watches over the righteous

1 Peter 3:12 “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers…”

The righteous practice righteousness

1 John 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous

obeying the Lords commands

Deuteronomy 6:25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.

Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

The righteous live by faith

Hebrews 10:38 But My righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him (NASB).

The righteous will shine as the sun in the kingdom

Matthew 13:43 "Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun [a glorious body] in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Psalm 37:29 The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell in it forever

To “shine as the sun” = the glorification of the body

Matthew 17:2 And [Jesus] was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Luke 9:32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

Christ’s majestic glory

2 Peter 1:17-18 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”—18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

it Is also our glory

Philippians 3:20-21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:  21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

The Lord is the strength of the righteous

Psalm 37:39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in the time of trouble.

The Lord delivers the righteous

Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions [troubles, injuries, distress] of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.

The Lord always provides for the righteous

Proverbs 10:3 The LORD will not allow the righteous soul to famish [to hunger], But He casts away the desire of the wicked.

HE PROTECTS THE RIGHTEOUS

Psalm 5:12 For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.

THE LORD LOVES THE RIGHTEOUS

Psalm 146:8 The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; The LORD raises those who are bowed down; The LORD loves the righteous.

NO ONE CAN SEPARATE US FROM HIS LOVE

Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36 Just as it is written, “For Thy sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

THE LORD IS FAR FROM THE WICKED

Proverbs 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous.

The Lord hears the cries of the righteous

Psalm 34:17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

Those that do evil, the Lord takes it personally

1Peter 3:12 “…but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.”

His eyes behold the evil and the good

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Who is that can harm you?

1 Peter 3:13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye [the elect pilgrims 1:1] be followers of that which is good?

suffering for righteousness’ sake

1 Peter 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

we can suffer for the wrong things

1 Peter 4:15 But let none of you [elect pilgrims 1:1] suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.

be happy when you suffer for christ

1 Peter 3:14 “…if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

It is a privilege not everyone experiences

Acts 5:40-41 “…when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.

A privilege for the church, the elect

Philippians 1:28-29 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. 29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

Rejoice! don’t be depressed in suffering persecution

Matthew 5:10-12 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: (why?) for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (the kingdom is their blessing). 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.  12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Inheriting a blessing

1 Peter 3:9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

The kingdom is the blessing

Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

A thousand years

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Don’t be afraid of man’s terror

1 Peter 3:14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

know the terror of the Lord

2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Fear the one that can deal with you after death

Matthew 10:28-33 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell gehenna. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.  30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men,  him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Be not dismayed in persecution

Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Keep the lord before you

Isaiah 43:1But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

He is your shepherd

Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Seeing him who is invisible

Hebrews 11:27 By faith he [Moses] forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Set apart Christ as Lord in your heart

1 Peter 3:15 But [in contrast to fear and trouble in v.14] sanctify the Lord God in your hearts [“sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts” NASB]: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

the lord is who we must obey

Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

The Lord is our future judge

1 Corinthians 4:4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

Hebrews 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

No provision for the flesh

Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

 Future Accountability

Colossians 3:23 “…whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

Be prepared to explain the hope that is in you

1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear

the hope of age-lasting life

Titus 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal age-lasting life.

The righteous hath hope in death

Proverbs 14:32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

answer… with meekness and fear

1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear

The servant of the lord instructs in meekness

2 Timothy 2:24-25 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,  25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.

fear the future!!

Matthew 10:32-33 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men,  him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Don’t be blotted out of the book of life!

Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Be written with the righteous

Psalm 69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous.
