1 Peter 2:18-20

November 08, 2007

1Peter 2:18-20 Servants, be subject [hupotasso -under obedience, Submitting yourselves] [Present tense] to your masters [despotes] with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward [crooked, harsh, unfair, unreasonable]. 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.  20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

SUBMISSION FOCUSES NOT ON PERSONALITY BUT POSITION

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power [authority] but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God

FOR THE LORD'S SAKE

1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

WITHOUT ARGUMENT

Titus 2:9 Exhort servants to be obedient [be under the authority -BBE] unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; [without argument -BBE]

GIVE NO OCCASION TO BLASPHEME

1Timothy 6:1 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered.

WITH FEAR

1Peter 2:18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward [crooked, harsh, bad-humoured, unreasonable, unfair, perverted, wicked].

FEARING GOD

1 Peter 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

Colossians 3:22  Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

RESISTING AUTHORITY WILL COST US

Roman 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power [authority], resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation..

ACCOUNTING DAY

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

TO THE FROWARD

1Peter 2:18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward [crooked, harsh, unreasonable, unfair, perverted, wicked].

GOD'S COUNSEL

Genesis 16:6-9  But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid [Hagar] is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.  7  And the angel of the LORD found her [Hagar] by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.  8  And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.  9  And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

YIELDING PACIFIETH

Ecclesiastes 10:4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

RIGHT IN GOD'S SIGHT

Acts 4:18-19 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God.

FOR THIS IS GRACE

1Peter 2:19 For this is thankworthy [Grace], if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

 TAKE IT PATIENTLY

1Peter 2:20 For what glory [honor] is it, if, when ye be buffeted [punished] for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable [Grace] with God.

IT IS DESERVED

Luke 23:39-41  And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?  41  And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

KEEP DOING THE WILL OF GOD

Ephesians 6:5-8  Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;  6  Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;  7  With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:  8  Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

PATIENT IN TRIBULATION

Romans 12:11-12  Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;  12  Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

NOT ACCEPTING DELIVERANCE

Hebrews 11:35  Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

CALCULATE

Romans 8:18  For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

REMAIN IN THE SITUATION KEEPING GOD'S COMMAND

1 Corinthians 7:21-22 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God's commands is what counts. 20Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him. 21Were you a slave when you were called? Don't let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord's freedman; similarly, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ's slave. 23You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men [by compromising]. 24Brothers, each man, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation God called him to.

ENDURANCE WILL BE REWARDED

James 1:12  Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

2 Timothy 2:12  If we suffer [Endure], we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
